A former Minister of Aviation and
chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, has
been released from detention after meeting his bail conditions.
He was released from the Ikoyi Prison in
Lagos, two months after his arrest, detention and arraignment by the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Fani-Kayode was arrested on May 9, 2016 for allegedly receiving N840m during the build-up to the 2015 presidential election.
He was arraigned alongside a former
Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, and Danjuma Yusuf, on June 28, 2016
before Justice Hassan Sule on 17 counts of conspiracy, unlawful
retention of proceeds of theft and money laundering.
He was, however, granted bail in the sum of N250m on July 4.
As part of his bail, he was ordered to deposit his passport in the custody of the court pending the outcome of the case.
Fani-Kayode was also asked to present
two sureties who own landed properties within the court’s jurisdiction
and have evidence of tax clearance in the state.
The ex-minister did not immediately meet his bail condition, hence his continued detention for days after the ruling.
