The charges brought against anti-corruption crusader and Abuja-based legal practitioner, Mr Leo Ekpenyong by the Nigeria Police Force on the instigation of former governor of Akwa Ibom State and Senate Minority Leader, Mr Godswill Akpabio, and the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Lamorde, has been dropped today by the Attorney General of the Federation.
The police had preferred charges of defamation and injurious falsehood against Ekpenyong before a judge, Yusuf Gagarku of the Upper Area Court, Gudu, Abuja, on November 5, 2015 for writing petitions against Akpabio and accusing Lamorde of compromising petitions.
This is victory for the conscientious people of Akwa Ibom State who are
demanding accountability for the over 2 trillion naira received by
Akpabio during his tenure. It is the triumph of justice over corruption
and tyranny.
This is a testament of the new Nigeria.
Who would have believed that a time will come in Nigeria when Akpabio, with all his money and connections, will no longer be able to manipulate critical institutions of government for his selfish interests or clampdown mindlessly and ruthlessly against those who dare challenge his nefarious and barbaric activities?
Today, Leo Ekpenyong has proved to Akpabio that there are things that neither money, nor more money can do.
I commend the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN for standing up in defence of the oppressed and the rule of law. This is a clear message to the corrupt in the country that they can no longer intimidate whistle blowers.
I congratulate my brother, Mr. Leo Ekpenyong, on his vindication.
It is time for Akpabio to render account of his stewardship and no illegal injunction will save him.
