The International Champions Cup clash between the
Premier League duo is under threat after two Chinese Super League games
were postponed following heavy rain
Manchester City and Manchester United are set to meet in the Chinese capital on Monday but downpours have already claimed two domestic clashes and there are now fears the marquee fixture could go the same way.
Chinese Super League fixtures between Beijing Guoan and Yanbian Funde and Tianjin and Chanchung Yatai were postponed due to waterlogged pitches on Wednesday.
Rain in the capital has grounded flights and forced the cancellation of hundreds of trains in recent days.
Organisers of the International Champions Cup, however, were relaxed when asked by Goal about the prospect of a cancellation.
The weather in Beijing is set to ease in the coming days but there are further storms expected in the build-up to Monday’s derby, which is set to be an 80,000 sell-out at the Bird’s Nest.
Should the match be cancelled, it will mean Pep Guardiola’s City could start the new campaign with just three friendlies under their belt. It would also be the second time plans for a friendly in Asia were scrapped this summer, after a planned meeting with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in early August was shelved thanks to the South Korean club’s involvement in a match fixing scandal.
Having kicked off their pre-season with a narrow defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday, City would only play Borussia Dortmund, in Shenzhen next Thursday, and Arsenal, in Sweden on August 6, before starting the 2016-17 campaign against Sunderland.
United, meanwhile, scheduled more fixtures this summer at the behest of Jose Mourinho.
Former United boss Louis van Gaal had decided on light summer preparations during what would be his final months in charge at Old Trafford, but Mourinho wanted more opportunities to assess his squad.
Fixtures against Wigan, which was won 2-0 last Saturday, and Galatasaray were added to United’s games in China, where they will take on Borussia Dortmund in Shanghai on Friday.
