THE Senate President, Dr Bukola
Saraki, yesterday, in a surprised move, reshuffled Senate committees, with
spokesman of the Senate Unity Forum, Kabir Marafa, taking over the chairmanship
of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), while Senator Oluremi
Tinubu, wife of APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, took over the
headship of the Senate Committee on Environment.
The move is seen as an attempt to woo senators
who had been opposed to his leadership of the Senate. He, however, removed
Senator Babajide Omoworare, APC, Osun East, as chairman of the Senate Committee
on Rules and Business and announced him as chairman of Senate Committee on
Legislative Compliance, a non-existent committee before now. Before yesterday’s
development, Marafa, who was not only one of the senators that dragged the
Senate President and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, to court over alleged forgery
of Senate Standing Rules had also been consistently an open critic of Senator
Saraki, chaired the Senate Committee on National Identity Cards and National
Population. On her part, Senator Tinubu was the chairman, Senate Committee on
Women Affairs. The development, according to the Senate President, is in line
with the recommendation of the Senator James Manager-led Senate Reconciliatory
Committee. He said the committee made the recommendation as a way of bringing
peace in the upper legislative chamber. A total of 14 committees were affected
in the reshuffle.
