The Sin of Gombe Lawmaker in Akwa Ibom State
By Solomon Bassey
Hon. Ahmed Usman Haruna, the Minority Leader of Gombe State House of Assembly is probably the youngest lawmaker currently in Nigeria.
Today, at the ongoing retreat for Honourable Members on "Legislative Practice and Procedure", held at Le Meridian Ibom Hotel & Golf Resort, Uyo, the Gombe State Lawmaker mounted the podium on polo and jeans to give his remarks, putting to question the dressing stance of some lawmakers at official functions.
Recall that, on April 12, 2016, the Member representing Itu State Constituency at the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly was embarrassed and silenced at the day's plenary for indecent dressing. The sin of the lawmaker was that, he folded his sleeves at the plenary session, hence the "indecent dressing".
It all started like a Nollywood movie, scripted and stage-managed on the floor of the House, when during the plenary session, the Member representing Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Rules, Business and Ethnic, Hon Aniekan Uko, shouted “Mr Speaker, Point of Order!” at the top of his voice.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Barr) Onofiok Luke, eventually recognised him to raise his “point of order. Hon Uko observed that, his colleague, the Member representing Itu State Constituency, Hon Idongesit Ituen, “dressed indecently” to the plenary in total breach of Rule 4, Sub 8 of the House Standing Rules.
Hon Uko did not end there, he went further to say that, in pursuant to the stated House Order, Ituen should not have been allowed access to plenary.
He prayed the Speaker not to grant the “defaulting” and “indecently-dressed” lawmaker any recognition to either contribute to the day’s proceedings or comment on any issue throughout the Tuesday’s plenary, so that it would serve as a lesson to him and others alike, in case of next time.
Interestingly, the Speaker granted the prayers of the Ibesikpo Asutan lawmaker and ordered that the “indecently dressed” Itu lawmaker should not speak or make contributions at the day’s proceedings, because he was “indecently dressed”, as was sighted by the Chairman, Rules, Business and Ethics.
The Speaker also used the opportunity to also lecture Hon Idongesit Ituen and other lawmakers fond of dressing “indecently” to the plenary session of the AKHA, urging them to desist forthwith.
Surprisingly, one may begin to wonder why Hon Ahmed Haruna was not called to order on this kind of "indecent dressing" at a legislative function by those who scripted Hon Ituen's embarrassment few months ago.
However, there are mixed reactions trailing Hon. Haruna's dressing, putting to question the clamoured youths inclusion in government
