BEING THE COPY OF THE LETTER OF COMPLAIN/APPEAL SUBMITTED YESTERDAY TO THE VICE CHANCELLOR AND CHAIRMAN GOVERNING COUNCIL OF UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS OVER THE SUSPENSION OF STUDENT UNION LEADERS.
With great humility, we
extend the best regards of the National Association of University Students'
(NAUS) to your highly esteemed personality and office. We sincerely appreciate
you for your kind gesture and the wonderful impact you have been taking towards
the growth and development of the educational sector in Nigeria and the society
as a whole, and we also congratulate you on your numerous achievement so far,
more grease to your elbow sir.
Sequel to this sir, the
leadership of the National Association of University Students' (NAUS) humbly
appeal to the management of this great citadel of learning to re-instate the
University of Lagos Student Union (ULSU) that was suspended on friday 8th April
2016 after the two days protest held between Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th
April by the students to draw attention of the school authorities to the
deplorable state of infrastructure and facilities in the university.
The suspension of the
student union was not the best decision by the management but calling the
student union leaders to dialogue and provide solution to those issues raised
by the students. The suspension of the union is is like killing the right,
interest and potentials of the students because the Nigeria's 1999 constitution
and the African charter on Human and People's Right supported the freedom of
association, rights of the members of the association to elect their leaders
and to maintain a union without any interference from the university
authorities. The students must be allowed to take up the leadership position,
so as to develop leadership potential and make us more responsible in the
future.
It came as a surprise to
us as a university students body when we got the information that the student
union leaders were suspended by the University of Lagos management on wednesday
27th July 2016 which involved Mohammed Olaniyan - President, Adeyanju Adepekun
- Speaker, Jumai Fabuyi - Public Relation Officer, Emmanuel Afolabi - General
Secretary, Ojo Oluwatobi - Financial Secretary, Anita Kaizer - Sport Secretary,
Akinnubi Damilola Pedro - Chief Whip and others.
We wondered why the
student union leaders will be suspended because of their involvement in a
peaceful protest that was held between Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th April
2016 against the poor welfare conditions on campus. The student union leaders
were elected to promote and protest the interest of their members and not
otherwise.
The National Association
of University Students' (NAUS) humbly appeal that the University of Lagos
management should temper justice with mercy and forgive the affected students
union leaders for the sake of peace and progress of the great citadel of
learning.
OUR APPEAL
1. Re-instatement of the
affected student union leaders that were suspended by the management.
2. Lifting off the ban or
suspension placed upon the University of Lagos Student Union (ULSU)
3. Absorption of students
representatives into the school council and senate to afford them the
opportunity of being part of the decision making process, which may affect
them.
4. Conducting the student
union election for the 2016/2017 academic session
5. No student union
leaders should be intimidated by the school management.
The National Association
of University Students' (NAUS) is one of the most peaceful and responsible
National union in the world and we shall continue to maintain the standard.
Therefore, we humbly urge the University of Lagos management to consider our
appeal for the sake of peace and progress.
Sir, We are hoping for
your utmost consideration and positive response.
Yours in student's
solidarity
