The Chairman of Ikono Local Government Council, Mr Itoro Columba has reiterated government's desire to initiate projects that will bring succour to the people at the grassroot, as well as explore all available avenues to generate revenue to the government.
Mr Columba stated this while on an assessment tour of Urua Udo, a popular market co-owned by Uyo and Ikono Local Government Councils recently.
The Council boss who was accompanied by Barr Mfon Ben, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council and other council officials stated that, the motive of the tour was, to identify ways that the government can synergize with the communities to give the market a face-lift.
"What you have seen today is an indication of the strong bond existing between the two of us. Maybe successive governments have been neglecting this market, but we have decided to do certain things differently from what was obtainable on the past. We want to use this market as a symbol of unity among the people of Ikono stock".
"We decided to come in and establish a strong bond between our government and the communities in tandem with Governor Udom Emmanuel's agenda of sustainable development".
"We are going to demonstrate capacity, we are going to demonstrate sincerity of purpose. But we need the maximum support of everyone in this community to lift this market".
The Chairman also used the occasion to sue for peace among the different villages that play host to the market.
He said: "We are coming with a new vista, we are coming as people who want to change things in this market. We want peace to reign and it is on the basis of peace that development can come to this community.
“Never in the history of Urua Udo will people fight. That’s our resolve and I think that’s also your resolve. We are going to work together as brothers. Itak and Ikot Odung shares the same common ancestry and should never take up arms against one another".
Speaking also, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, Barr Mfon Ben, hinted of government plans to constitute a Joint Market Committee that will embark on verification of all existing structures in the market and urged the people to avoid anything that will hinder development within the communities.
A youth leader of one of the villages, Engr Udobot expressed satisfaction at the level of commitment made by the Chairmen by proposing the development of the market and appealed to the government to carry the youths along in whatever programmes they have for the communities
