Local media said Mrs Obama made the pledge at the end of her day-long visit to Liberia on Monday.
Education for girls is the central theme of the first lady’s trip, which also includes stops in Morocco and Spain.
The money will be provided by USAid to the US Peace Corps Volunteers, initiating education programmes for girls within the framework of Girls Leading Our World (GLOW).
Mrs Obama was quoted saying the amount was meant to provide quality education for rural girls and women in the post-Ebola Liberia.
The school she visited suspended mid-term exams scheduled to start Monday “to allow the students to give Mrs Obama a rousing welcome to appreciate what the United States has done for us”, principal Harris Tarnue said.
“I feel and know the constraints women and girls are facing around the world, and I’ll always like to travel with my two daughters and my mother to meet them,” Mrs Obama was quoted saying.
She expressed regrets that about 62 million girls across the world were not in school.
“How can we sit by in the United States with all the resources and not attend to the educational needs of the suffering women and girls?” she asked.
The US First lady insisted that “we have to change the culture that girls should not go to top schools”, and urged the girls to pursue secondary and university education
