Enugu Rangers have reclaimed the number one position on the Nigeria
Professional Football League standings after securing a vital win in
Uyo, beating Akwa United 2-3 at the Nest of Champions on Saturday.
Akwa United before this latest outing have had it rough against teams
from the Eastern part of the country this season, losing previously to
Abia Warriors and Enyimba.
The Flying Antelopes then compounded their woes with the win on Saturday.
Akwa United started on a wrong footing when one of their players,
Harrison Ibukun, inexplicably handed Rangers the lead inside three
minutes after he mistaken turned the ball into his own net.
The hosts had to wait till the 45th minute before they could draw
level as Fortune Omoniwari headed in Ubong Friday’s well-taken cross to
end the first half even.
Rangers, playing with so much confidence, piled pressure on their
hosts and their efforts paid off just after the hour-mark as they were
back in front in the 61st minute.
Substitute Chebe Egbuchulam later increased the tally for Rangers in
the 74th and even though Omoniwari pulled one back for Akwa United at
the death; it was not enough to deny Rangers all three points which has
now taken them back to top spot ahead of fellow title contenders, Wikki
Tourists.
The Coach Imama Amapakabo tutored side now have 46 points from 26 games.
