There appears to be no end to the crisis rocking the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as no fewer than four people have emerged as chairmen following parallel congresses held by factions of the party in Imo state. Those laying claim to the chairmanship seat include Nnamdi Anyaehie, Charles Ezekwem, Greg Owuamalam and Chuks Ajaelu, Vanguard reports. The impasse may not be unconnected with the palpable interests of some party bigwigs like Senator Hope Uzodinma, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, Senator Bright Nwanne and Charles Onyeagbako, who are allegedly eyeing the 2019 gubernatorial poll.

According to a party chieftain who spoke on condition of anonymity, Uzodinma and Ohakim were backing the Anyaehie-led faction, while the Ihedioha group is supporting the Ezekwem faction. “We equally understand that Senator Bright Nwanne and Chief Charles Onyeagbako are fully backing the Greg Owuamalam-led executive. What we have today, is a conflict of personal interests in the party,” the PDP chieftain added.
Feelers from the Independent National Electoral Commission showed that the commission has recognized the Charles Ezekwem faction, though the Anyaehie group has described the news as false. Meanwhile, loyalists of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state are happy over the continued crisis and disunity in the PDP. Speaking on Owerri, one of the party loyalists prayed for the PDP to remain in crisis till 2019.
The APC loyalist said: “To tell you the truth, APC loyalists are very happy with what is happening in the PDP at all levels.
It is our fervent prayer that the crisis should gain greater momentum in the days ahead.” The leadership tussle between the Ali Modu Sheriff and the Ahmed Makarfi factions of the PDP is causing division in the party. Both men are laying claim to the chairmanship position. This resulted in the emergence of two state chairmen in Imo state as parallel congresses were held on Monday, August 8, by both factions. Sheriff’s faction named Nnamdi Anyaehie as state chairman, while Chief Ezekwem emerged for the Ahmed Makarfi group.
Recall that in May, the Imo High Court, siting in Owerri, stopped the ward and local government congresses of the PDP in the state
