An inspiration.
Sometimes in our journeys through life, people come in and out of our circles at different seasons with different lessons. Some lessons come with tears especially when within us there was some painful adjustments to make, some lessons bring bliss and others yet, inspiration. I am full of gratitude for my parents, siblings, family - immediate, extended and social media fam (esp you face book family).
Today however, I have Prof on my mind. Like most nurses this Prof of mine never said much but deduced the totality of
you with quiet understanding and always offered support. My journey through
America was one that put me through major changes in everyway you can imagine.
I had an almost absent support system ( couldn't run to mom, no cousins nor
aunts to help with kids, sisters on the other side of the world , a tumultuous
family life, an almost absent financial base, different foods, different
culture), just me and of course the kids. It was not an uncommon sight to see
my kids sitting with me in class and even raising their hands to answer
clinical questions - like "people should brush their teeth before going to
bed" (That was Teesa at 6). I like to believe I am a strong black woman,
and I play that role too well. I sat in front and asked all the questions
-pissing my course mates off I am sure (lol). Needless to say my Prof saw
through my "stiff upper lip". When I almost derailed from school she
offered extra coaching with school work. She offered her time and talked with
me through difficult family situations, comforted me when I cried in class at
the passing of my brother and had all the class work I missed ready when I
returned from his funeral in Africa. As a brand new nurse I landed 2 jobs and
lost the two, but Prof consoled and encouraged me keep at it . In her words
"it will take a little time to get your skill set together"- don't
give up. So I hung in there (A salute to all the new nurses for not running
off, because indeed its not an easy role to settle into). Prof never grew tired
of offering recommendation after recommendation with every new contract
position I got. Today I have my skill set together for sure and I have since
settled into working with the best hospital in NYC. Today I am inspired to not
just be a nurse on the unit but continue to widen circles with the campaign for
excellence in nursing across continents with the Campaign for Nursing
Excellence in Nigeria . Today Face Book family and of course all the nurses
who passed through Prof Como's class, please join me to salute Dr June Marie Como,
Professor extraordinaire, for her support, love and encouragement. I pray that
all of you starting over in America will have someone like her in your circles.
Thank you Prof. June Marie Como.
God bless you.
