The name 'Buhari' is not above the Constitution of Nigeria.
If you think that I will be cowed by derisive public opinion from standing up to my conviction you are just wasting your time. I did not study law to please ethnic and religious bigots. Is President Muhammadu Buhari the only person is this country whose name is Buhari?
What is the cacophony about? I have not applauded Chinakwe for naming his dog "Buhari" whether for good or bad reason. But I will not close my eyes to the oppressive and illegal actions of the police.
If you are an ethnic bigot that is your business.
The views expressed by Nigerians over this case has proven once again that many of us are loyal to our ethnic and religious groups and not Nigeria. Suddenly, Buhari has been publicly confirmed as a hero of the North. Even the police that should be a civil law enforcement institution is alluding to this pathetic ethnic sentiment.
I really feel pity for the future of this country. One contributor even said that I am defending Chinakwe because he is a fellow Southerner. I guess he does not know that Inibehe Effiong supported Buhari's candidacy ardently instead of his fellow Southerner - Goodluck Jonathan.
If that dog was named Jonathan would Chinakwe be in detention today? Would the police have arrested, detained and charged him to court?
No matter what anyone says, the law cannot treat the name Buhari above other human names. This is a recipe for dictatorship.
Daily we are seeing reasons to believe that the current regime is anything but democratic. Buhari is now being officially confirmed as a divisive figure. I will not be one of those Nigerians that will encourage tyranny in the name of defending, respecting or supporting Buhari.
